Should we go to Disney World if my toddler has been on antiobiotics for CDIF?

We planned a trip a few months ago and it is for next week to Disney. My kids are so excited. but my 22 month old came down with severer diarrhea about 5 weeks ago and nobody could tell me what it was until last week I took her to the hospital. she tested positive for a bacteria infection called CDIF in the colon has to be on medicine until the day before we are supposed to leave.. They said it could come back and I don’t want to be in FL if it did. How miserable would that be to stop every 20 minutes to change her diaper and she would be miserable too. she can’t have the foods she likes right now, etc. but how do i disappoint my other kids? We were going for my 7 year olds birthday?? any advice. I know we could wait i guess i did buy the insurance just in case. but I dont know if we should go or not. Please any advice serious only. thanks..

Maybe call the doctor and see if he/she could call in a prescription for you while you are away if at all possible it was needed. I’m sure there is a pharmacy somewhere around disney. Then you could still go and not worry too much about it. If it was me though I think I would just reschedule and try my best to explain to the older kids, if not you may not enjoy the trip yourself either.

Drugs for Diarrhea: Unnecessary and Expensive

Acute or simple diarrhea is of­ten self-limiting and will disap­pear on its own without treat­ment. Some people, however, need quick relief from severe di­arrhea and may be forced to avail of the many antidiarrheals that flood the market.

Despite the allure of such products, medical experts said most antidiarrheals are un­necessary and a waste of money.

“The World Health Organiza­tion has emphasized that the most important therapeutic intervention in diarrhea is oral rehydration. This can be done through prepa­rations prepared at home, using water, sugar and salt or through cereal-based preparations, such as plain rice porridge. Yet, we have nearly 200 antidiarrheals, including adsorbents, as­tringents, anti-spasmodics and dangerous combinations of an­tibiotics,” according to Dr. Michael L. Tan, executive director of the Health Action Information Network in “Dying for Drugs.”

“The industry even has its own versions of oral rehydration salts and solutions which are much more ex­pensive than Oresol, a prepack­aged mixture available for free from certain health centers,” Tan added.

“Nearly five million children a year die from diarrhea. A sim­ple, highly effective therapy – oral rehydration – is available that could prevent at least half of those deaths, at a cost of a little more than 10 cents a child. Instead, more than $430 million is wasted on antidiarrheal medicines that are described as ineffective, of no value or dan­gerous,” said Andrew Chetley and David Gilbert in “Problem Drugs.”

While a few products are con­sidered safe for simple diarrhea, they are not recommended because what’s important in this case is the replacement of fluids to prevent dehydration. Since di­arrhea is the body’s way of elimi­nating toxic substances, stopping it by taking antidiarrheals may do more harm than good.

“People often begin taking antidiarrheals the moment they have a single extra bowel movement. I think that’s a mistake. Certain symp­toms, however unpleasant, are the body’s way of dealing with trou­ble and are in reality a defense mechanism. Fever is one such ex­ample. Elevated temperatures, which we rush to ‘normalize’ with aspirin or acetaminophen, in fact, make it more difficult for certain pathogens (‘bad’ bacteria) to survive,” explained Dr. Isadore Rosenfeld of the New York Hos­pital – Cornell Medical Center in “Modern Prevention: The New Medicine.”

“By the same token, di­arrhea is also a protective res­ponse that rids the body of toxic or harmful substances. So in most cases, and certainly in the first few hours, it’s probably not a good idea to try to stop the diar­rhea,” he said. (Next: More useless diarrhea drugs.)
