Taking Care of a Ferret: Baby Ferret or Kits

So you want a ferret and have decided on a baby or as they are known in the ferret world as kits. Since you are looking at a baby ferret then you may want to know about the entire ferret birth process.

The female ferret is referred to as a “jill” and the male is a “hob.” A jill’s pregnancy cycle runs about 42 days. When she begins to build a nest and shows signs of restlessness then you can be pretty sure that she is pregnant. If you have a hob you will want to remove him during the pregnancy period since the jill will require more sleep and more during the gestation period.

It is a good idea to transfer the jill to a dark secluded pen about two weeks before delivery. It is not unusual for the jill to pluck her hair during this time to help prepare the nest for the kits. Outside of providing plenty of water and food during this time it is best to keep her warm and leave her alone.

It is extremely important to leave the kits and the jill alone during the whelping period. Although it is a little gross the mother will usually eat the placenta. The hormones in the placenta help the mother in the production of milk.

It takes around 20 days for the kits to get their color and begins to open their eyes and about 6 weeks for them to be weaned.

Ferret food is relatively expensive at least compared to cat food. It also has a much higher level of protein and fat content that is needed for a healthy diet. The food that you choose should have at least 35% protein and 20% fat. Ferrets need a high quality and balanced fats in their diet such as eggs and poultry meal. They should not eat soy or corn gluten meal since it may cause urinary tract obstructions later in life. After they are weaned they will need to begin eating adult food. Since ferrets eat very little the food, even though more expensive, will last longer than that of a feline.

Fresh water should always be available and changed daily for any pet. Hold off on giving them treats until you are ready to begin housebreaking your ferret. Watch out for the dairy products as well. Young ferrets love milk and ice cream, however your ferret will more than likely get .

Your baby ferret will need the essentials in life. A cage with a large door and plenty of room to grow, the cage for a young ferret will need solid bottomed cage. Bedding material must be disposed of or laundered weekly. Towels are always handy to use and easy to wash but be sure and keep their nails trimmed or they will get tangled up in them.

You’ll also want to get a litter box and standard cat litter can be used.

One last thing or should I say things! TOYS, TOYS AND MORE TOYS! You can’t have enough toys for these playful little creatures. They will begin to learn them by name and will get them for you. Oh yeah, they will also hide them in the strangest of places.

Breastfeed baby and diarrhea

My daughter is 7 weeks old. How can I tell if she has diarrhea I MAY have had a little tummy bug yesterday. It was short lived, but I did nurse her right before it started with me. Today when I changed her, she pooped before I got the diaper on her and lets just say clean up was a mess. It was the same color as usual, but not sure this is what always happens as she has never pooped outside the diaper before. With that said, I know breastfeed babies USUALLY do not get diarrhea, but how can I tell if she does?

My baby actually does the same thing. (Shes breastfed as well) As a matter of fact, while changing her diaper, she has projectile pooped on me 3 times already! One time at the pediatricians office! Anywho-if it’s not more watery than normal-then she should be fine..Also-check her temp. Most of the time when infants get diarrhea or a tummy bug-it is accomanied with a (101.5 or higher) Check her temp and if the BM looks like it usually does- she is probably fine. Breastfed babies typically have runnier BM and if she had to go while you were changing her-then it’s easier for it to be projectile!

Plan The Right Irritable Bowel Syndrome Diet To Help Relieve Your Symptoms

Like other health conditions, irritable bowel syndrome can be triggered by what you eat and drink. Therefore, if you want to avoid cases of IBS, you should follow the right Irritable Bowel Syndrome diet. But what is the recommended diet for IBS?

For those who don’t know, let us first discuss what irritable bowel syndrome is. It is a disorder accompanied with symptoms including bloating, , constipation, gas, cramping and abdominal pain. IBS often cause patients to suffer great stress and discomfort. Despite the fact that it does not develop into any form of cancer, the effect that it has on so many areas is so great that it makes them suffer so much in life.

Irritable bowel syndrome attacks American adults, primarily women at 35 or younger.

Getting an IBS diagnosis
The first step to treating or controlling Irritable Bowel syndrome is to consult a doctor. This is very important since proper and correct diagnosis is required to come up with treatments that will help you in controlling symptoms of IBS.

Although there are no particular tests for IBS, but still diagnostic tests are needed to rule out the possibilities of other diseases that exhibits the same symptoms as that of the Irritable Bowel Syndrome. The tests commonly performed for IBS include blood tests, x-rays and stool sampling test.

Another test you can get is called colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy, which involves the used of a tiny instrument with a  camera at the end, that is inserted inside your anus or colon.

The doctor may also base his diagnosis on the IBS symptoms that you are experiencing or exhibiting such as abdominal pain, gas, diarrhea, constipation and others. Some doctors refer to a specific list of IBS symptoms to help them in their diagnosis.

Observing the right irritable bowel syndrome diet
Changing your diet can actually help in reducing symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome. However bear in mind that before you change your diet you should first ask your doctor for an advice since there are certain foods that you can eat and those you cannot, because the latter deteriorate your condition.

Keeping a journal can also help you to keep track of that you have to avoid. Some of the common foods to avoid include dairy products, which really caused irritable bowel syndrome symptoms. Fiber-rich foods are great for controlling IBS with constipation.

Examples of food rich in fiber are. Fiber-rich foods are great for keeping the colon distended, which in turn helps avoid spasms. There are also some types of fiber that store water in the stool, which in turn makes it easier for people with IBS to get rid of their feces. But remember to include fiber in your daily intake slowly to avoid gas pain. On the other hand, you will not benefit much if you have IBS with diarrhea.

In addition, it is recommended that you drink six to eight glasses of fluid each day to make sure you keep away from constipation, dehydration and IBS with diarrhea. Drinking sodas or any carbonated drinks, chewing gum, eating too fast and eating large meals should not be practiced for IBS patients since it triggers symptoms of IBS.

To sum it up, you should follow the right irritable bowel syndrome diet if you want to lessen or avoid any cases of IBS.

What comes AFTER the BRAT diet (for an adult)?

I have been vomitting and have had diarrhea for a few days now…I have been only able to keep down ginger ale, a little bit of chicken broth and toast today. I’m pretty hungry and wanting to try to move to something more substantial, but I’m not sure what will be somewhat safe…also, smells have been bothering, so nothing that when cooked (or uncooked I suppose) smells bad or strong. I don’t plan on eating anything until tomorrow at least, so I know for sure if the toast and broth settle well…but basically once I’m dealing well with those, what comes next? Thanks!
Oh, and add water to things I’ve been consuming.

Try some jello and clear juice like apple juice and maybe some rice. Or canned peaches always works well with me and my kids.

Use a Roach Spray to Stop Roaches in their Tracks

Roaches are disease-carrying bugs. They are disgusting, embarrassing and very tough insects. The problem with roaches is that they hardly need any resources for their survival. They grow in numbers very fast, and it is really an issue if they breed in your house. Roaches cause asthma, allergies, diarrhea and even urinary tract infections. Hence, it is very important that you tackle roach problems as a priority. This will free your house from this irritating bug. A roach spray will be very helpful to you in doing so.

Roaches love to hide in cracks and crevices of your house. They love to thrive in hiding areas, below the sink, wet areas, cupboards, drawers and cabinets and near the dustbin. You or the exterminator could target these areas to kill the roaches. The fact about roaches is that they love areas that are damp, filthy and dark. Being nocturnal bugs, roaches move about freely at night if they find in your house.

The most effective way of killing cockroaches is to expose them to insecticides. These roach-repellent sprays are commonly available in the market. They are very useful and all you need to do is buy them and spray on a roach if you see one. A good spray will kill the insect within seconds. Such aerosol sprays can spread the poison even within cracks and crevices. Some of these sprays are also odor-free so that it does not get difficult for you or your family.

You must be very careful in handling such sprays. At the end of the day, they are insecticides that are harmful to human health as well. You have to take care to keep them away from the reach of children. You must carefully follow all the safety precautions mentioned on the bottle. Ideally, you must cover your nose and mouth very well while spraying. In addition, it would be best if you could leave the house after spraying, as inhaling the spray could be risky.

Some varieties of the roach spray work on the idea of flushing out the roaches from their hiding areas and killing them. Firstly, the poison makes the roaches very uncomfortable. They run out of their hiding places, trying to flee, but the spray works on by suffocating. The advantage is that the roaches do not die in the cracks and hence you can dispose them off after killing them. It would be difficult to remove dead roaches from their hiding place.

Let me give you a few tips here that will help you to deal with roach problem:

• Keep your house clean and dry

• The target areas of roaches especially, must be dry and if possible spread boric acid powder in the corners

• Do not invite roaches by leaving food on the floor or in the kitchen

• Invest in a good spray that will come handy if ever you find a roach crawling. A home free of roaches ensures good health for the members.

• You might want to call an expert exterminator to sprinkle the roach spray in the entire house. They will keep you furniture and other possession apart to do a through job for you.

My is keep pooing around the newspaper?

He pretty much knows where to poo but sometimes he poos around the newspaper especially when he has diarrhea. And I put him to the newpaper while he poos at the wrong place but he ends up pooing around the paper again. What should I do? Plus can someone recommend me what type of spray can get rid of the pee smell or the poo stain?

First off, find out WHY he has diarrhea! Next, be consistent on taking him out more. As for the papers, make a larger area and use a lead to keep him on them while he goes. Use good training to housebreak him. There are a lot of earth/animal friendly cleaners at your stores that will take care of that but if you are having accidents you aren’t training them correctly.

Travelers Diarrhea

OK… We might as well talk about it and not mince words… diarrhea….

The trots, Delhi belly, Montezuma’s revenge, tourista… call it what you will, if you travel, you may have to put up with this one day.

Country and city names aside, you can get diarrhea anywhere.  It may be the water… even if it isn’t dirty or contaminated.  Water away from home contains different minerals and bacteria than your water at home… and it doesn’t matter where home is or where you travel.  Americans traveling to Mexico may worry about Montezuma’s revenge, but we’ve talked to Mexican tourists who got tourista in California!

There are countries where you shouldn’t drink the water.  Hotels in those countries will usually provide complimentary bottled water in your room.  (Double check before you just assume this though…. both whether the water is safe and if the bottle is complimentary.)

If in doubt, go ahead and drink bottled water… better to be safe than sick.  Beer, wine, bottled soft drinks, boiled coffee and tea are also safe to drink.  (But skip the ice cubes.)

You can get intestinal troubles from the as well as the water.  It all depends on what your body can put up with.

To be really safe, the tried and true travelers’ rule is to eat food only if it’s peeled or boiled or well cooked…. a rule I’m afraid we break more often than we should.  We do eat at street stalls if they look clean… but you never know what microbes are lurking….

And we eat salads even on safari or in the jungle or traveling overland in India or Tibet.  Sometimes it’s a matter of “what else can you do”.  For all the fun experiences we have being this adventurous, we haven’t had all that many bouts with “the revenge”.

We had an old doctor tell us that one of the best ways to ease your digestive system into the local cuisine was to eat things that are acidy and yeasty…. he suggested beer and yogurt.  The yogurt abroad has enzymes that can help… and the beer?  I don’t know how much it helps, but it’s fun to try all the local beers, and it’s always safe when the water isn’t.

The causes of diarrhea are just as likely be the stress of travel, the fact that you’re overtired and jet-lagged, and that your immune system is worn down, so it may not be the food or the water.

If you do get diarrhea, it will usually run its course in short order.  Eat bland foods, and take it easy for a day.  Drink plenty of water to replace lost fluids and avoid dehydration.  You can take anti-diarrheals to help slow those trots down and start you feeling better as long as you don’t have a fever or blood in your stools.

Gross as it sounds, I had an attack when we were walking the Vietnamese city of Hoi An.  Our driver wasn’t coming back for a couple of hours, so I told our guide every time I had to “make a dash”.  She seemed to know people everywhere, and I was graciously allowed into the back room of businesses and several private homes to, …ahem…, use the facilities.  I wasn’t too happy at the time, but in retrospect, I had a tour like no other!  What a story, eh?

To re-emphasize… if the condition persists, if you’re running a high fever, or if you have blood in your stools, you should see a doctor and get antibiotics.

Don’t be worried about this.  Try to be smart about what you eat and drink.  Even then you may get “tripped up”.  You’ll soon be over it… and maybe you’ll have stories to tell too.

help my dad is ill and has a fever and diarrhea?

well as it says my has a fever and has some diarrhea does he have a flu?

Don’t overreact to you father having the flu. He could or could not have the H1N1 flu (swine flu) or he could just have the regular flu. After all, it’s still the end of the regular flu season up here in the Northern Hemisphere. Even if there was no swine flu going around he should still go to his regular doctor since he has diarrhea and a fever; those are symptoms of the regular flu.

Growing Medicinal Herbs – Chamomile

Chamomile is one of the most common medicinal herbs that you can grow in your garden. It is fairly easy to grow and with its many uses, especially as a medicinal herb, it definitely is a valuable addition to your home herb garden.

Grow Chamomile

Chamomile, grown for its daisylike flowers, prefers full sun outdoors. It grows up to 20 to 25 inches and is best planted in the ground than in containers. It is also ideal for mass planting and landscaping provided that each plant is 6 inches apart. Soil has to be well drained with adequate nutrients, and like most sun-loving herbs, water only when the topsoil is dry to the touch.

Propagation is through the seed. However, starting chamomile from seed can be very tricky and challenging. It’s better to start from a young seedling in a container then transplant in the garden once the plant has hardened. An established chamomile plant is very hardy and can tolerate almost any growing conditions.

Medicinal Properties

The key element in a chamomile plant is its flowers. Chamomile flowers are used as medicinal herb, cosmetic agent, herbal tea, aromatherapy ingredient and can even be tossed in salads and beverages.

Its flowers have anti-inflammatory, anti-spasmodic, nervine or nerve-soothing properties. As anti-inflammatory, it can be used to treat skin irritations, gingivitis, rheumatism, arthritis, and other painful swellings. As antispasmodic, it can be used to relieve stomachache and gas pain, menstrual cramps, indigestion, diarrhea and ulcer. It is also a very good laxative. As nervine, it is slightly sedative and can be used to induce sleep and dull pain. It also helps to alleviate anxiety and depression.

As a cosmetic agent, chamomile can lend anti-allergenic and soothing properties to beauty products. It is sometimes added to soaps and lotions because it can soften the skin. It is also great for aromatherapeutical applications because it has a calming effect and relieves mental and physical stress. It is also used in shampoos for its sweet-smelling scent.

However, chamomile is not recommended as an alternative medicine for pregnant and breastfeeding women. It is also anti-coagulant (blood-thinning) and vasodilative (nerve-dilating) and must be avoided, at all cost, weeks before and after undergoing surgery. Use with medications having the same effect is also highly discouraged.

How to Use

This wonderful and common medicinal herb is often use in the form of herbal tea. Dried flowers are added into boiling water then covered and steeped for at least 10 minutes. Alternatively, you can also place them in a tea bag to eliminate the need for draining.

Dried flowers can also be used in a bath soak as a relaxing beauty regimen. They can also be made into potpourri and burned for aromatherapy. Commercial chamomile essential and massage oils are also available in the market. If you’re in for an organic gastronomical treat, you can eat chamomile flowers fresh by tossing some into your salad or your favorite lemonade.

The uses and benefits of growing medicinal herbs in your home is plenty and truly amazing. Having chamomile, along with other common medicinal herbs will make your herb gardening more worthwhile.

Swine Flu diarrhea — best to treat with anti-diarrheal medicine or allow it to run its course?

It is usually best to let diarrhea run it’s course. You should react by simply drinking nothing but clear liquids for 24 hours. That gives the colon a rest, and lets it get rid of whatever had it irritated. The diarrhea should stop fairly quickly once you stop eating, and drinking will replace the lost fluids. You should only become concerned if you do not hold down liquids, or the diarrhea doesn’t stop after the 24 hours of only clear liquids. The next day, you should eat bananas, white rice, apples/applesauce, and white bread/toast/crackers. Day three you can eat a bland diet. You should also cut out all dairy products, as you can’t digest them and they just cause more diarrhea as a result. You do not need anti-diarrheal medicines at this point, and it would be irresponsible to give them to you just yet. Just drink clear liquids and rest. Your body needs the rest to fight off whatever has you ill, and it will do that best if you rest and drink.
