Puppies are prone to several types of intestinal worms which may, or may not, produce clear symptoms. Sometimes you will see worms in your puppy’s stool or notice other signs of worms, such as itching, weight loss, diarrhea, vomiting, lethargy, dull coat or pale gums. Puppies with worms in their stools need to be evaluated to determine which type of parasite is affecting the animal.
A veterinarian can perform a stool test for puppies showing worms in their poop, but even if there is no evidence, these tests are recommended as part of routine care. In order to have a stool test performed, you will need to bring a sample of stool passed within the last 24 hours to your veterinarian’s office. The most common types of screening are fecal flotation and fecal smear. Fecal flotation is the test used to identify worms or their eggs, while fecal smear is used to test for single-celled parasites. These tests should be performed for all puppies with worms in their poop, or with any other signs of worm infestation. Stool tests are also part of routine examinations. Since there are often no visible signs of worms, all puppies and dogs should be tested for worms at least once a year.
If you notice worms in your puppy’s stool, you may be able to identify the type of worm the puppy has. The most common types of intestinal worms are: hookworms, tapeworms, and roundworms.
Hookworms are blood-sucking parasites that are usually not visible in the host’s stool. However, the stool may appear black or tarry. If your puppy has hookworms, you may also notice pale gums or lethargy from anemia, dull coat, diarrhea, vomiting or slow growth. Tapeworms are small worms that look like grains of rice. You may see these in your puppy’s stool or around the anus. Itching is the most common symptom of tapeworms. Roundworms are long, spaghetti-like worms that can often be seen in a puppy’s stool or vomit. Roundworms cause abdominal bloating, weight loss, lethargy, diarrhea, vomiting and dull coat.

Black stool? Can Anyone help. I’m scared.?
This is the first time I’ve had black stool. It wasn’t diarrhea, or hard to poop out. Should I be worried?
I heard black stool maybe an indicator of internal bleeding.
No alcohol.
I’m 15. I don’t drink.
Many people think they have a black stool when usually it’s simply a very very dark brown. The black stool that may indicate internal GI bleeding is really ‘tar-like’ and pitch black (research “melena”).
From your age and inferring that this is the first time it’s happened to you, I wouldn’t worry. Many different kinds of foods and medicines can turn stool dark, almost black. Some very fatty food will darken stool. Blueberries, licorice, Pepto-Bismol (bismuth), and iron supplements are also common things that can turn stool nearly-black.

Could it be anxiety? Could it be my very poor diet of eating only saltines, bread, bananas, and a hint of peanut butter only a few times a day?
I have severe anxiety disorder and I have a phobia of vomiting. I just started taking Prozac again and usually it makes my anxiety worse before it gets better and at the moment, since the norovirus is going around so badly at my work, I am terrified of eating cuz every stomach pain, cramp, or gurgle I think I’m getting sick.

tea for dogs?
my maltese has always had a very very bad digestive system.
he has been on every type of dog food you can imagine and he has had diarrhea, constipation, painful gas and ulcers.
he is only 2 years old. we have now managed to keep it at bay however like clock work about every 2-3 months he has a very bad spell and cries in pain.
as we are his 2nd owners the doc suspects that he might have had tick fever which went untreated & his digestive system has suffered.
now when he has a bad spell we give him mylanta or peptysol which helps him immediately but i was thinking what could help him naturally?
like some tea i could put out in his water bowl? anyone know any teas that help the digestive system that is good for dogs? or fruits that are really tasty that help? mind you he doesn’t want to eat when he is in pain so something he can maybe take every day to keep his tummy healthier.

The only thing Ive heard about tea is that it makes their urine less acidic and that it only applies to females. I could be wrong but its is something my grandma passed down to me to stop getting dead spots in the grass from urine.

my dog recently had diarrhea which my mum figured because she had changed her type of biscuits she might have had a reaction and now its back to her old biscuits that’s past. then we realised she had been scratching allot to the extent that she was cutting herself we thought it was fleas so we flead her and it never helped we washed her and that also never helped so we took her to the vet he said it was a skin allergy and gave her a jag that stopped it for a week now shes itchy again and now heavy breathing/panting. She could have food allergies. Vets usually recommend something like Science Diet or Iams but don’t buy into it. The best food to buy is a truly holistic food. You cannot tell how healthy it is by looking at the colorful labels and claims.

I recommend trying Innova EVO. It is entirely grainless and by-product free. I have a dog with severe flea/tick/food and environmental allergies and this is the only food I have had success with. However, all dogs are different. Slowly switch him over to the new food and leave him on it for a while. If he doesn’t do well on it try anther good food.
I hate it when dogs are having health problems and you can’t figure out what it is! I hope you and the vet figure out what is going on.
