Is it normal to have diarrhea, nausea and a headache after donating blood?
I did it about 2 hours ago. Afterwords I felt a bit faint but that passed when I ate and drank. Now I’m home I’ve just had very bad diarrhea, I’m feeling nauseous and my head is pounding. Is this normal or something to worry about? It was my first time so I’m freaked out. I’ve also got stomach cramps. Will I be ok?
When I was giving blood they said that it was very slow to come out – it took 25 minutes for 1 pint- , I’m not sure if that makes any difference.
I donated blood once and almost passed out right on the table. They continued to draw blood until they had 3/4 of a pint – enough to be considered a full unit. I started to go into shock. I laid on the table for about 20 minutes before they let me go. I had to stop in the bathroom on the way back to my work place because I had diarrhea. I felt weak, dizzy, and nauseous for about three weeks. I had the stomach cramps you mentioned also. This is not typical of blood donors, but it can happen.
I have a very sensitive system and you probably do too. My body does not want to give up any amount of blood. I don’t give blood anymore. I can’t afford three weeks down time after donating.
